London-based Run an Empire sought our expertise in taking running app / strategy game Run An Empire out of a classic iteration trap.
An initial Kickstarter success, the project saw three major versions in three years with limited success in hitting the project’s ambitious aims.
During a weeks-long discovery process with the co-founders we identified two major challenges: insufficient studio capacity and system design domain expertise for the targeted genre and a disconnect between running experience and game systems.
HOW WE HELPED
We proposed a strategy based on replacing the core loop with a design that the studio could execute but would be equally competitive in the targeted F2P market.
We also repaired the integration between running and game activities, feeding incentives from each category of activities into the other.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT
Run An Empire went on to a successful soft launch and saw an overall App Store review score boost from 2.8 to 4.2 stars. The game is currently in the testing and preparation stages for a worldwide launch.
