Run an Empire (the studio) sought our expertise in creating a new category in both the running app and strategy game markets with Run An Empire (the game).
An initial Kickstarter success, the project saw three major reboots in three years with little traction. During a weeks-long discovery process with the co-founders we identified two major challenges: insufficient studio capacity and system design domain expertise for the targeted genre and a disconnect between running experience and game systems.
HOW WE HELPED
We proposed a strategy based on replacing the core loop with a design that the studio could execute but would be equally competitive in the targeted F2P strategy market. Extensive systems and economy simulations allowed us to repair the integration between running and game activities, setting up an incentive feedback loop between them.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT
Run An Empire saw an overall App Store review score boost from 2.8 to 4.2 stars ahead of a successful worldwide launch.
